Ridge trackset to tower & is great
Sat 30th Jan: Beautiful day; great conditions; temperature -15 c to -20 C; great for classic - styrofoam snow for the skaters.
Did classic starting at P12 -> #40 -> #24 -> 1 blue to the fire tower -> 1 blue -> upper entrance #24
-> #40 -> P12
Things are up-side-down with NCC report:
#1 blue is reported as not track-set and not recommended => it’s been trackset to the fire tower and is in excellent condition for classic and skate.
#24 is reported as trackset and a green tick => it’s only been trackset from the water tank to #40. It’s OK for classic but is a bit of a trap for skaters.
#40 is trackset and in good condition (as reported)

Snow conditions were rather packed this afternoon, not much powder left on the trail. Still some powder left off the beaten-path but we sure could use lots of new snow!!!
Meanwhile, 20 cm of snow are expected in Newfoundland and up to 30 inches in Washington DC.
Oh well, at least we’re having Winterlude this year instead [...]

On the one hand we’ve been seeing day after day of skier reports raving about how good the skiing is on the cross-country trails in Gatineau Park…85% of the network is recommended…
On the other hand the NCC today posted “Warning: Arduous Conditions”
What can this mean?
It means that the grooming team are feeling challenged by [...]

bcguru messaged me on this saying:
Nicely worded…I have found the bc trails to be fantastic this year. The usual concern of water ditches, exposed rock, falling ice and other bc issues simply goes with the remoteness of the terrain. The NCC is wise to step with caution in such a low snow year. [...]

At XCOttawa Karl Saidla says the skiing today is so good that people should think of leaving work early. See his report here.

Superb fresh grooming and track setting on FP and on Ridge, at least between Penguin and Champlain Lookout. 1B not freshly groomed. Excellent conditions for skate and classic, get out and ski this afternoon if you possibly can!

I was stopped on the street today by a friend who exclaimed “you shouldn’t even go to the NCC site” because she’d decided not to go skiing last weekend based on the NCC trail report showing most back country trails as not recommended (and marked with a big red X. She’d later seen reports [...]

Joseph Potvin today in the Ottawa Citizen points out the irony of “green” car technology prompting lithium exploration in and around Gatineau Park in the context of the considerable surface areas formerly green and growing, covered by paved roads.

Not serious ”conflict” but reports both of snowshoes on ski trails and skis on snowshoe trails, grumbles and people starting to talk about how to avoid such ”conflicts.” I know that some individuals, and also some NCC people are considering the issue. I figure open talk about it (without flames) is a good way to [...]

Hi Charles. I have not been snowshoeing for a couple of weeks now, so I am out of the loop. I am not aware of any conflicts between snowshoers and skiers, so this news is a surprise to me. At any rate, perhaps we can arrange to have an online chat involving all concerned parties [...]

Hi Peter. Some people are starting to talk about how to constructively approach a now small but growing problem; trail use conflict between skiers and snowshoers. I’ve asked Marc Charron (the most frequent showshoe post-meister here) if he is interested in helping work out collaborative solutions. How ’bout you?

It was the best of skis. It was the worst of skis. Great weather and at least 5 cm of fresh snow. Great grip wax. The tracks were fabulous, but not the classic ones that had to be skied in. There were (guessing) rabbit, fox, wolf, deer and somethi. . . [...]

can anyone tell me how trail 50 was today-for skating? Is the ridge and deep gouge from snowmobile now gone? Last report on trail 50 stated only 30% was good for skating given ongoing problem with “the ridge”. Many thanks
PS Thanks for the report on 1blue. I thought it odd that the trail was reported very good recently and then with a X today.

Hey Will,
Demsis has changed their grooming machine in the North, so you should no see ridges if you ski on #50. I skied the whole trail last Wed. and it was perfect. I was skating skiing. You should give a try:-) I am patrolling tomorrow in Philippe Lake sector, so I’ll report on this site how the trails are.

Thanks for the update. It did seem that things were worse up there more than in the south end. It will be tough to decide if I ski to the Fire Tower or do trail 50 on Sunday. Given a poor report last week on the status of 50 I purposefully didn’t go there but hope to get out there again soon. Cheers
