We would like to inform you of some upcoming demolition projects in Gatineau Park. As stipulated in the Gatineau Park Master Plan (2005), the long term objective is to eliminate, as much as possible, residential use of properties including the renting of buildings for residential purposes. When rental properties that do not conform to the Park’s mission require extensive and expensive renovation work, they will be demolished and the site will be restored to its natural state.
The National Capital Commission (NCC) with therefore be proceeding shortly with demolition work occurring at 66 Carman Road as well as at 168 and 174 Cowden Roads. These three properties were acquired in order to increase NCC land holdings in Gatineau Park, protect the environmental integrity of the Park and prevent future development. All three properties were evaluated by the Federal Heritage Buildings Review Office (FHBRO) and were confirmed to hold no heritage value.
It is important to note that the NCC will carry out a ‘green demolition’ in order to reuse, recycle and reduce the material that would normally end up in the landfill. This demolition will also respect industry and NCC standards. Work will begin on January 13th, 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2011. Work will take place from Monday to Friday, between 7AM and 7PM.
