Sobriety Checkpoints Seeing Double

On May 17 the RCMP reported the results  of sobriety checkpoints in Gatineau Park over the previous weekend. Coincidentally their most recent exercise took place on June 17. Here’s their latest catch:

During these operations, the RCMP and its partners checked over 600 vehicles. Of these vehicles:

  • One person was driving with a suspended licence and was charged accordingly;
  • One vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days;
  • One person was charged for possession of marihuana;
  • One person was arrested for impaired operation of a vehicle while under the influence of drugs;
  • Two individuals were arrested on arrest warrants and charged with breach of conditions.

In addition, 22 Approved Screening Device tests were conducted: one driver was charged with having open liquor. Two tickets and 35 verbal warnings were also issued for various minor infractions.

“In addition to apprehending impaired drivers, the sobriety checkpoints also allow the RCMP to reduce fatal traffic collisions and other traffic concerns in an effort to keep federal roadways and properties safe,” said Cst. Ouellet, who also stated that the public can expect to see more of these types of checkpoints in the coming weeks and at various areas in the National Capital Region. He also reminded motorists that if they plan to drink, they must plan for alternate means of transportation.

  1. “Sobriety” checkpoint, eh? Looks like it was a just a checkpoint to bust people for whatever the Mounties could find. That’s the truth behind most of these checkpoints, from what I’ve observed.

  2. I wonder how someone could be in a position to have observed “most of these checkpoints”..
    In any case, I’m pleased that they’re checking traffic in the parc. I’m up there on a bike often and I smell weed from passing cars and at the lookouts often enough that I’m not at all surprised when it happens, and while most of the traffic seems responsible, there is still a much larger percentage of aggressive / reckless driving relative to outside the parc.
