There was a soft icy crust on top of the snow tonight, both on and off the beaten path.  There’s still a surprising amount of soft snow if you venture off the trail and into the woods.  Made for a very pleasant outing under the moonlit sky.

Trail condition were quite nice this evening with a good 10cm of fresh new snow on the trails and more coming down every minute.

We could have done without the warmer temperatures and light rain this afternoon.  As a  result, the snow was soft and heavy but at least it wasn’t slushy.

Nice 3cm cover of fresh fluffy snow made for good conditions today on trails #60 and 61.  It was almost enough to forget about the hard-packed base underneath.

Hard to believe but the current forecast shows up to 3 cm tomorrow (Thursday), up to 3cm on Friday and maybe 1 cm on Saturday :-)

Trail conditions were good last night for walk in the park  on Trail #70, with or without  snowshoes.

Conditions were hard-packed and winter boots provided  plenty of flotation on the snow.

  • Hi Mark
I downgraded the snowshoe reports blog thinking that there wouldn’t be any more reports this season. The blog is still there, I just took the scrolling links off the front page. I guess the ski report blog will follow soon.

  • is hoping to see a new collaboration initiative become a reality in the Gatineau Park.

  • Charles, I’m all in favour of finding solutions that build harmony in the park. That’s applies to skiers and snowshoers as well as to other users such as hikers, bikers, campers, kayakers, canoers, etc…I’m also interested in making the park itself a better experience for all users.

  • Marc, some people are starting to talk about how to constructively approach a now small but growing problem; trail use conflict between skiers and snowshoers. Interested in helping work out collaborative solutions?

  • I don’t know how much new snow we received this past January but I don’t recall seeing very much. Last year, Ottawa received over 80cm in January, probably more in the Gatineau Park.
