A good article. However it makes a few mistakes: 1) Paul Dewar is not a member of the Transport Committee–Dennis Bevington is the NDP member; 2) Senator Nolin was not speaking at the second reading of Bill C-37. He was speaking to Senator Spivak’s private Gatineau Park Bill S-204, and commenting on C-37’s shortcomings.
As committee deliberations confirmed, Bill C-37 was a legislative hatchet job that will in no way protect the park or prevent the NCC from continuing to hack it to pieces.
That’s why it was almost universally opposed by committee witnesses.
And contrary to what Mr. Cannon’s press secretary says in the article, meetings with opposition members could not have been very productive, since the clause by clause study was mired in deadlock, confirming a clash of irreconcilable visions–public vs. private.
