Culturally Inappropriate?
One of the signatories of the petition to bring back the old trail names told me that when he encouraged his friends to sign, some of them refused, saying to do so was culturally inappropriate. I sincerely hope that this is unfounded.
The sensitivity appears to stem from people's suspicion that trail names were replaced with numbers because of an objection to the fact that trail names were mainly English while the population of Quebec is mainly French. As noted elsewhere, the people I've talked to, who were there at the time, deny that this was the reason. What's more, as can be seen by these images, quite a number of trails in the park do have signage including names and these appear to have successfully addressed translation challenges.
It's just that few of the historic ski trails cut by the Ottawa Ski Club retain their names.
