Trails and Names

The government of Alberta has just celebrated the renaming of two trail sections at Canmore in honour of outstanding athletes Beckie Scott and Sara Renner (depicted right).

Gatineau Park has its own Olympian remembered in a trail name too. Depicted above-left is Mr. 17 Continue reading

Trail #11 and its Names

Skiers who have been around Gatineau Park for some decades will know that trail # 11 was once known as the Merry-Go-Round Continue reading

Friday’s interview with Alan Neal is now available for your listening pleasure at the All in a Day website. Look under “featured audio” in the right hand column.

About That Map

One thing we didn’t mention during our talk on CBC today was the fact that the map with the old trail names on it is being sold as a fundraiser for the Canadian Ski Museum. The Museum is a registered charity so the $49.99 price has no HST. More on the map here.

Win a Map

When CBC All in a Day airs today’s piece on Gatineau Park’s old ski trails it’s just possible that some lucky listener will have a chance to win a copy of the reproduction 1967 historic trail map. I’m told the interview will run at 3:10. Be listening!

I have it on good authority that my interview with Alan Neal will air around 3:10 on Friday.

CBC Interview Coming Up Friday

I just recorded a piece with Alan Neal about the cross country ski trails in Gatineau Park. I believe it will air on Friday on the CBC Ottawa show All in a Day. If I get a more exact time than “between 3 and 6″ I’ll post an update. Continue reading

Lowdown Trail Coverage

The Low Down to Hull & Back News print edition gave coverage to the “bring back the trail names” campaign this week. See a PDF of the article here.

Though the article implies that Charles Hodgson (that’s me) wants to ditch the trail numbering system, I think that’s unlikely and what I really want is just that the names be reinstated; presumably they can coexist with the numbers (they already do in some cases).

The petition count at the time of the LowDown article was 189 but here’s an up to date count:

Culturally Inappropriate?

One of the signatories of the petition to bring back the old trail names told me that when he encouraged his friends to sign, some of them refused, saying to do so was culturally inappropriate. I sincerely hope that this is unfounded.

The sensitivity appears to stem from Continue reading

Historic Tee Shirt Update

Yesterday I noted that there existed in some people’s back closets tee-shirts made some years ago that commemorate the old Gatineau Park ski trail names. Today I have an update.

Wally Schaber tells me:

The late Gary Watts, founder of the Ottawa Outing Club combined with Trailhead to co sponsor this T shirt and a matching poster. It sold out at the first Ottawa showing of the Best of Banff Film Festival ,35 years ago as a fund raiser for the Ski Museum.

In 1991 the ski museum moved from Sussex avenue to The Trailhead building. We`d like to celebrate the 20th anniversary of that move, by creating a new version of this shirt as a fund raising vehicle for the museum.

We’re talking about designs now.
