That Sinking Feeling

(Update from NCC below) Went to inspect that washout in the Gatineau Parkway beside P8. The parkway is still closed to cars but at this point it is pretty solidly closed off to walkers and cyclists as well (see 2nd image below). The reason is clear to see; the whole roadway has a significant sag in it with one half having completely collapsed as shown (click image for bigger picture).

The fence extends across the road and well into the trees so I thought the info I’d been given about there being a sneak route was mistaken. However as I stood there about six cyclists threaded their way through the trees to get past the fences and continue on their ride.

NCC provided me info May 2 quoted below the picture.

From the NCC:

The Parkway near P8 is seriously compromised and will take a few months to repair. At this time, this area is very dangerous and continues to slump. We have fenced it to prevent pedestrian or cycle passage. When repairs are completed it will be open to all traffic. We are hoping to have this area re-opened by July/August.

  1. I recall Dan Ackroyd’s father was the original road engineer when they built the Parkway and he used to ride on the bulldozer.

  2. I wonder if they will pave that whole stretch between P8 and P9 after the repair is done. It’s been very rough and patched for many years.

  3. I wonder what the Meech Lake Tri will do?
